With the weather getting warmer, it’s time to start looking for the perfect summer vacation so you can make the most of the sunny season. But while some people enjoy spontaneous adventures with no plans or responsibilities, at some point making some plans can be helpful. We’ve outlined a few of the essentials for planning a travel trailer camping trip and why they’ll be important to consider ahead of time.
CHOOSE YOUR DESTINATION
A great place to start is to think about where you’re going. Some people like to camp in the same place every year as a tradition while other people like to explore new places as often as they can. Whatever you are into, choosing where you want to go and what you want to see can help you make a number of other important decisions.
PLAN YOUR ROUTE
One such important decision is how you’re going to get there. Sure, it’s good to know which exits to take and which roads will get you where you need to go, but there’s more to this step. Towing your travel trailer is going to be much different from driving your everyday commuter vehicle, no matter how big or small the rig may be. You’ll want to choose roads that can accommodate your unit and roads that you’ll feel comfortable driving on.
Another important consideration is figuring out where you’ll be stopping every night. For some trips, you may reach your destination in one day, but others may require you to drive for a while before getting where you want to go. Knowing where you’ll need to stop every night can help you reserve campsites ahead of time. This is important during peak camping season as many campgrounds will be pressed for space and you won’t want to wander around in the dark looking for a place to set up your travel trailer.
COMPILE YOUR PACKING LIST
Your packing list is probably high on your list of concerns, considering it’s going to look a little different from other packing lists. Think about actively making a list of supplies you use on a regular basis. As you go about your daily activities, write down what items you use for any given task so you can later decide which ones will need to be packed for your travel trailer camping trip.
This should include all items, like linens, cleaning supplies, and dishware. You should also add camping-specific gear, like powersports equipment, fire-starting materials, and emergency supplies.
There’s one more major area you’ll want to address before hitting the road and that’s making sure your vacation trailer is ready to go. You’ll want to do a thorough check of the entire vehicle, but you may also want a professional to look it over. If this is the case, then contact our service department here at S.C.A.T.T.
