One of the benefits of traveling in an RV with your family is the money you save in the long term. However, the cost of fuel for a recreational vehicle can be a significant portion of your budget. Motorhomes, for example, can hold between 100 and 150 gallons, putting the cost of a single trip to the gas station at well over $200. Thankfully, there are several ways you can use less gas so that you do not have to fuel up as often. Check out our list below, and then visit us at S.C.A.T.T. Recreation for more information to make your vacations better. Our dealership, located in Roseville, California, serves Rocklin and Citrus Heights, California.
REDUCE VEHICLE WEIGHT
If you weigh your RV down, you will end up spending a lot more on fuel. An overloaded vehicle that exceeds gross vehicle weight limits can have serious consequences. Be realistic about what you need to bring with you on your next camping trip or cross-country adventure. Pack what you plan on using and try to avoid unnecessary extras.
DO NOT TOW A VEHICLE
Just like packing too much on your motorhome can use more fuel, towing a vehicle can have a similar effect. The weight of a vehicle pulled behind your RV can make you go through a lot more gas. Toys like ATVs and UTVs add a lot of weight to your load. Consider unique options for having fun at your intended destination. For example, you can rent bicycles at your RV campground instead. While a personal vehicle can be a perk when you want to see local sights, it might cut into your budget too much.
CHECK TIRE PRESSURE
Neglecting to keep your tires at the recommended tire pressure can cause you to use gas more quickly. Tires that are under-inflated experience more friction on the road and burn up a lot more fuel. Go by the tire pressure shown in your owner’s manual.
PLAN EFFICIENT ROUTES
Before you even set out on your RV adventure, you need to know where you are going. Plan a route that gets you from Point A to Point B efficiently. If you want to stop occasionally, attempt to do so near gas stations and in the same general direction of travel.
No matter what gas prices are, you will always be better off when you can spend less on it. Besides these great ways to use less gas, consider looking into ways to bring the price of gas down at the pump. Many great rewards programs exist for different gas stations.
